The Biggest Hits and Artists of 1964

There is no doubt that 1964 was the year of the Beatles. So, how did jazz great Louis Armstrong end up with the number 1 record of the year?

It's all about longevity.  The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" held the number 1 spot for seven weeks but only spent five additional weeks in the top ten.

"Hello Dolly!", on the other hand, was number 1 for one week but spent one more week in the top ten then the Beatles' hit. Farther down the chart, "Dolly" spent three more weeks in the top twenty and five more weeks in the top 40.

Still, the Beatles had an amazing year with eight of the top 100 singles of the year and almost three times the total chart points of the second place Dave Clark Five.

The top hits of 1964 are calculated from the individual positions of the songs on the national charts and are based on the calendar year 1964.
