Bruce Springsteen to Get Special Tony Award; Everyone From Steven Tyler to They Might Be Giants Up For "SpongeBob"

by VVN Music

The Tony Award nominations were announced earlier today with a host of veteran artists being nominated in a repeat of earlier Broadway award announcements over the last week.

Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebelllum, Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman, John Legend, Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T.I., Domani and Lil'C are all nominated for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written For Theatre for the show SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical

This time around, Imogen Heap did not receive a nod for the Harry Potter show, most likely because the Tony's considered it a play (or "play with music") and not a musical which is how the Outer Circle classified the show.  The crowd from SpongeBob are up against Adrian Sutton for Angels in America, David Yazbek for The Band's Visit, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Frozen and Jeff Richmond and Neil Benjamin for Mean Girls

In addition, Bruce Springsteen has been selected to receive a special Tony for his Springsteen on Broadway one-man show which was originally set to run for three months but will have been open for over a year by the time it is done late this year.

Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical received the most nominations with twelve each while The Band's Visit, Angel's in America and the revival of Carousel each have eleven and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two and My Fair Lady have ten.

The full list of nominees can be seen at Billboard.
