The Original Lineup of Sponge is Reuniting for the Detroit Music Awards

by VVN Music

In 1991, Vinnie Dombroski, Mike Cross, Tim Cross, Joey Mazzola and Jimmy Paluzzi came together to form Sponge.

That original lineup only lasted until 1994 but would produce the band's debut album, Rotting PiƱata, along with their breakout hits, "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)". Paluzzi left the band that year, replaced by Charlie Grover.

That original lineup is coming back together on Wednesday night (May 4) at the Fillmore Detroit for the Detroit Music Awards. It will be the lineup's first performance together in 24 years. The members will also be receiving a special award during the evening.

Also performing at the awards are rapper Kash Doll, Americana rockers Frontier Ruckus, electronic band Liquid Monk and Virginia Violet and the Rays.

Dombroski is the only original member of the band that remains part of the lineup. The Crosses left in 2001 and Mazzola in 2004. To date, Sponge has recorded eight studio albums and had a further top ten Mainstream Rock hit with 1997's "Have You Seen Mary".
