The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna Salutes Randy Scruggs

by VVN Music

Randy Scruggs touched a lot of people during his life both personally and musically.

Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who worked many times with Scruggs, wrote a salute on Wednesday (April 18) afternoon.

We’re all just reeling from the news that our dear friend and brother, Randy Scruggs has passed away.

We’ve known Randy since that night in 1970 when the entire Scruggs family, Earl, Louise, Randy, Gary and Steve came to see NGDB in concert at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville.

What followed was a decades-long musical relationship that included all three “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” projects. Randy played on Vol. 1 and produced Volumes 2 and 3. His beautiful solo guitar pieces, “Both Sides Now”, “Amazing Grace” and “Farther Along” closed out each of those records .

Randy was a gracious, generous and immensely talented guy.

Always quick with an encouraging word and a smile . And wickedly funny, too.

He was a consummate pro, as a picker, songwriter and producer.

We’re all so grateful for the time we had together.

Always thought of Randy when I heard:

“Nashville Cats, play clean as country water....”

Like to think he’s doing just that..right now.

RIP Little Brother.

Our deepest condolences go out to Randy’s wife Sandy, his daughter Lindsay, his brother Gary, and the entire Scruggs family..
