Passings: Eddie Amoo of The Real Thing (1950 - 2018)

by VVN Music

Eddie Amoo (sometimes written Eddy), a member of the 70's British R&B group The Real Thing, died suddenly in Australia on Friday (February 23) at the age of 67.

The current members of the group announced Amoo's passing:

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our brother and inspiration, Eddy Amoo, who passed away on 23rd February, age 74. Eddy was a showman and a legend. Please leave your messages here. Much love, Chris and Dave. The Real Thing #eddyamoo

Eddie started his musical career with the Merseybeat a capella group, The Chants, which was managed for a short time by Brian Epstein.

Meanwhile, The Real Thing was formed in 1970 with Eddie's younger brother, Chris, along with Dave Smith, Kenny Davis and Ray Lake. The group released a number of critically acclaimed by poor selling singles.

In the mid-70's, Eddie Amoo joined the group and, in 1976, they had their first hit, with the help of David Essex with whom they toured,  "You To Me Are Everything" (1976 / #1 U.K.).

That was the beginning of career that, over 29 years, would deliver a total of six British top tens.
  • "You to Me Are Everything" (1976 / #1 U.K.)
  • "Can't Get By Without You" (1976 / #2 U.K.)
  • "Can You Feel the Force?" (1979 / #5 U.K.)
  • "You to Me Are Everything (The Decade Remix 76-86)" (1986 / #5 U.K.)
  • "Can't Get By Without You (The Decade Remix II)" (1986 / #6 U.K.)
  • "So Much Love to Give" (with the Freeloaders) (2005 / #9 U.K.)
Eddie, along with his brother Chris and Dave Smith, kept The Real Thing going over the years including a number of festival appearances in recent years. They also have been working on a documentary about the band over the last year.

For fans of the band, the two surviving members have already said they will move forward. "Chris and Dave have made the decision to continue The Real Thing's 2018 tour from April 7. All March dates are cancelled - but they will continue as a two-piece, with their live band, from April 7 and through 2018."
