Netflix to Premier Biopic on Early Female Rapper Roxanne Shante

At the young age of 14, Roxanne Shante convinced three New York area rappers, Tyrone Williams, DJ Mr. Magic and Marley Marl to record her doing a response track to the local hit "Roxanne Roxanne" by U.T.F.O.

The trio loved the idea and Marley Marl produced the track "Roxanne's Revenge". The new record was a hit and launched Shante to rap stardom.

Roxanne was also an early master of battle rap and freestyling and released two albums (Bad Sister (1989) and The Bitch is Back (1992)) along with a numerous singles, five of which made the Singles chart in Britain but, at the age of 25, she withdrew from the rap scene, only make occasional appearances as a guest artist.

Last year, a film about Shante, Roxanne Roxanne, played at the Sundance Film Festival.  Starring Chante Adams, Nia Long and Mahershala Ali, the film was originally bought by Neon for distribution but, last December, Netflix acquired worldwide rights.

Roxanne Roxanne debuts on March 23 on Netflix.
