"Bohemian Rhapsody", the Freddie Mercury Biopic, Gets Release Dates

by VVN Music

Even with the firing of original director Brian Singer and the addition of replacement Dexter Fletcher, it appears that the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody remains on schedule for an end-of-year release.

On Tuesday (January 16), Brian May posted general information about the film, which he is producing with bandmate Roger Taylor, Jim Beach, Robert De Niro and Graham King, which shows a Christmas day release in the U.S. with a rollout to the rest of the world over the next few days.

  • December 27, 2018 - Argentina, Germany, Mexico, Singapore
  • December 28, 2018 - Bulgaria, Spain, U.K., Turkey
Bohemian Rhapsody has had a tough time getting to the big screen. The film has been in development for eight years since it was announced in 2010 with Sacha Baron Cohen playing Mercury.  In July 2013, Cohen left the movie due to disagreements over the direction of the production.

Late in 2016, it was announced that Brian Singer would direct and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) would play Mercury. Principle photography started last September with a break scheduled over Thanksgiving.  Singer didn't return from the break, saying that had family matters to attend to and would be back "after the holidays", forcing the studio to fire him and bring in Fletcher.  Other reports said the firing actually was due to disagreements between Singer and Malek.

The film is now listed in "post-production" indicating that filming is complete.

The principal cast of the movie:
  • Rami Malek - Freddie Mercury
  • Gwilym Lee - Brian May
