Vintage Video: Bobby Helms Sings His #1 Country Single "My Special Angel"

by VVN Music

Sixty years ago today, on December 9, 1957, Bobby Helms took over the number 1 spot on the Country charts with "My Special Angel".

1957 was an amazing year for Helms. He had his first hit earlier in the fall with "Fraulein" which topped the Country Singles and went to 36 on the pop chart.  He followed soon after with "My Special Angel", a song written by Jimmy Duncan, which ended up hitting the top of the Country Singles and went to number 7 on Pop and number 8 on the R&B Singles.

Amazingly, he was also finding huge success at the same time across the board with "Jingle Bell Rock" which followed closely on "Angels" heals, going to 6 on Pop and 13 on the Country Singles.  "Jingle Bell Rock", of course, would go on to become a perennial favorite.

The top five on the Country Singles chart on December 9, 1957:
  1. My Special Angel - Bobby Helms
  2. Jailhouse Rock / Treat Me Nice - Elvis Presley
  3. Wake Up Little Susie - Everly Brothers
  4. The Story of My Life - Marty Robbins
  5. Geisha Girl / Livin' Alone - Hank Locklin
