Vintage Video: Belinda Carlisle Hits Number 1 With "Heaven is a Place on Earth"

by VVN Music

The Go-Go's are one of the most beloved all-female bands in rock history yet they only had two top ten hits and never made it to number 1.

Belinda Carlisle, the lead singer for the group, equaled their top ten count as a solo artist and surpassed their peak by hitting number 1 thirty years ago today (December 5, 1987) with the single "Heaven is a Place on Earth".

The Go-Go's had their biggest hit in 1981 when "We Got the Beat" went to number 2 and "Vacation" the next year, which reached number 8, became their second and last top ten.

Carlisle's very first solo single, "Mad About You", went to number 3 in 1986 and she followed the next year with her chart topping hit.  Her next two singles, "I Get Weak" (1988 / #2) and "Circle in the Sand" (1988 / #7) would give her double the top ten hits of her former group.

"Heaven is a Place on Earth" was written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley with Nowels producing and came from Carlisle's second solo album of the same name. Nowels and Shipley also sang backing vocals along with Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas and songwriter Diane Warren.  Thomas Dolby also appears on keyboards.

Here, Carlisle sings the song during her 1990 Runaway Horses Tour.
