Vintage Video #1's: Santana's Huge Comeback With Rob Thomas on "Smooth"

by VVN Music

It was eighteen years ago today, October 23, 1999, that Santana went to number 1 for the first time on the U.S. Singles chart with "Smooth".

Santana hadn't even been in the top ten for 29 years, going back all the way to 1970's "Black Magic Woman" yet the single, with Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas in front, propelled the group back to the top along with their album Supernatural, itself the first top ten album for Santana in eighteen years.

"Smooth" stayed at number 1 for twelve weeks and stayed around the charts long enough that it is now ranked by Billboard as the second biggest hit of the Hot 100 era (1958 to today) behind Chubby Checker's "The Twist".

The song went on to win the Grammy for Record of the Year, Song of the Year for writers Itaal Shru and Thomas and Pop Collaboration With Vocals.
