Rolling Stone Names the Greatest Metal Albums of All Time

by VVN Music

Rolling Stone magazine has unveiled another Top 100 list, this time saluting the greatest Metal albums of all-time.

The editors fully admit they had to be careful about what they considered metal and what was "metal-like" but didn't really fit the list. Artists like Led Zepplin, Deep Purple and Mountain were left out because they may have had metal elements but often drifted off into other genres. Also not making the cut were AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Grand Funk and Alice Cooper who were all closer to mainstream rock and roll then metal.

The list is certainly eclectic, touching on numerous bands that the marginal metalhead will most likely have never heard of such as Kvelertak, Pig Destroyer, Sodom and Entombed, but their inclusion shows just how deep the knowledge is of the metal scene by those who contributed to the list.

Of course, there's no doubt the bands that the voters felt were the best and most influential in Metal. Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne own a quarter of the top twenty while Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Megadeth each get two.

It's also notable of some of the albums that didn't make the top twenty, probably the biggest and most popular of which is Metallica's Metallica (aka The Black Album) which only turns up at 25.

Over the full one hundred, Black Sabbath placed six albums and Metallica had five while Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Slayer each had three.

The top twenty:
  1. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
  2. Master of Puppets - Metallica
  3. British Steel - Judas Priest
