Vintage Video: The Carpenters Play at the White House For President Nixon (1973)

by VVN Music

On May 1, 1973, 44 years ago tonight, the Carpenters were the special guest of then President Nixon to perform a show for visiting West German Chancellor Willy Brandt.

In introducing the group, Nixon called them "young America at it's very best". They followed with a twenty-minute show that touched on a number of their biggest hits including Close to You, Top of the World, Superstar and We've Only Just Begun.

The video of the performance is a little rough, appearing to come from an old VHS tape, but it is a rare chance to see The Carpenters at a very important show during their prime.
