Metallica Beats Ed Sheeran in Pure Album Sales, Number 2 Overall

by VVN Music

Metallica has sold a lot of tickets for their upcoming tour and the copy of Self Destruct that comes with each of those tickets has catapulted the band to the top of the charts.

Hits Daily Double estimates that, last week, Metallica moved almost 102.000 units of their album although they haven't broken that down into regular sales vs. ticket redemption. That's an increase of 26% over last week.  Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran's new album, Divide, had a sales fall of 76% to give him 77,500 actual units sold.

Of course, as is usual, younger artists pull ahead once streaming units are added in. Sheeran shoots to 160,000 units once on-line consumption is added, up approximately 82,500 units which is equivalent to 123,750,000 individual tracks streamed from the album during the week.

Metalica, on the other hand, moves to just 103,600 with streaming, an increase of just 1,600 units or 2,400,000 streams...and that's how modern music calculations work.

The soundtrack to Guardians of the Galaxy is back, 89 weeks after release, with estimated sales of 8,500, putting it at 13 on the pure sales chart; however, it didn't have enough streams to put it in the sales + streaming top 50.

Four other album by veteran artists had high enough sales and streaming to make the Hits Top 50.
  • Ripcord - Keith Urban
    • Sales - 6,000 / #24
    • Sales + Streaming - 11,500 / #34
  • Thriller - Michael Jackson
    • Sales - 8,100 / #16
    • Sales + Streaming - 10,500 / #37
  • Lemonade - Beyonce
    • Sales - 7,000 / #19
    • Sales + Streaming - 10,000 / #41
Final chart positions will be out on Tuesday.
