Vintage Video: The Kingston Trio Are the Mystery Guests on "What's My Line" (1963)

by VVN Music

For 25 years, people from all walks of life would come on stage to try to fool the blindfolded panelists on the series What's My Line?

The show, a variation of twenty questions, premiered on February 2, 1950 on the CBS network and ran through 1967. The following year, the show went into syndication where it was seen until 1975.

Originally hosted by John Daly and produced by Mark Goodman and Bill Todman, the show was originally called Occupation Unknown before taking on its iconic name. In the game play, panelists were allowed to ask questions of the mystery guest in a form that would only allow a yes or no answer. As long as the guest continued answering yes, the panelist could continue. A no would move the questioning to the next panelist. Ten nos and the guest was the winner.

53 years ago today, on August 11, 1963, the mystery guest on the show was the Kingston Trio who were questioned by panelists Arlene Francis, Tony Randall, Phyllis Newman and Bennett Cerf.

The Kingston Trio at the time was original members Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds along with John Stewart, who joined 1961. Stewart went on to write Daydream Believer for the Monkees and have a successful solo career in the 70's with hits like Gold and Midnight Wind.

Here is the entire program from that night with the Kingston Trio segment beginning at 17:38.
