Elton John's "Greatest Hits" Goes 17-Times Platinum; A Whole Bunch of Essential Albums Also Awarded

Elton John's 1974 album, Greatest Hits, has gone seventeen-times platinum indicating sales of over seventeen million albums in the U.S.

Covering John's first five years as a major star, the album is now tied for 12th place on the RIAA's list of the biggest selling albums of all-time with Boston's Boston, Garth Brook's No Fences, the Beatles' 1967-1970 and Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack. He is also number 8 on the list of all-time top selling artists in the U.S.

Outside of Greatest Hits, three other compilations by John have recently received awards. The Greatest Hits 1970-2002 is now six-times platinum, the 4-CD set ...to Be Continued and the more recent Rock Man: Number Ones are both now two-times platinum.

Eleven albums in the Essentials series have received new platinum certifications with two, by Johnny Cash and Billy Joel, named three-times platinum. Two additional Essential volumes were certified gold.

Also recently receiving multiple awards are R.E.O. Speedwagon whose The Hits went four-times platinum and The Second Decade of Rock & Roll 1981-1991 is now gold, and country artist Gary Allan whose album Set You Free is now platinum and single Watching Airplanes is gold.
