Steve Martin & Edie Brickell Nominated For a Drama Desk Award For "Bright Star", Billie Joe Armstrong For "These Paper Bullets!"

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell have been nominated for Outstanding Music in the Drama Desk Awards for their Broadway show Bright Star.

The nominations were announced earlier today and, as is pointed out by Roger Friedman at Showbiz411, there is a notable lack of African Americans in the acting categories, especially with a number of outstanding performances over the season. Note that Hamilton, which is quite likely to sweep at the Tony Awards in June, was not eligible for nominations this year as it was acknowledged last year at the Drama Desks while it ran off-Broadway.  Still, with shows like The Color Purple, Shuffle Along and Hughie winning praises, there were few nominations for the productions.

Martin and Brickell's show also received nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Carmen Cusack), Outstanding Feature Actor in a Musical (Paul Alexander Nolan and A.J. Shively), Outstanding Orchestrations (August Eriksmoen), Outstanding Costume Design For a Musical (Jane Greenwood) and Outstanding Sound Design For a Musical (Nevin Steinberg).

In the category of Outstanding Music, they go up against pop powerhouse Sara Bareilles for Waitress, Michael John LaChiusa for First Daughter Suite, Andrew Lloyd Webber for School of Rock and The Lobbyists for SeaWife.

Bright Star failed to be nominated for Outstanding Musical where the nominations were First Daughter Suite, Daddy Long Legs, School of Rock, Shuffle Along and Waitress.

In the category of Outstanding Music in a Play, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was nominated for the Off-Broadway production These Paper Bullets!. He is up against Estelle Bajou for Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally, Shaun Davey for Pericles, Phillip Glass for The Crucible and Tom Kitt for Cymbeline.

The Drama Desk Awards honor both on and off-Broadway shows unlike the Tony's which are only for those on the Great White Way.
