Vintage Video: David Gates Sings "If" on BBC's "Musical Time Machine"

David Gates, the lead singer of Bread, turns 75 today.

Gates was born in Tulsa, OK and grew up as the son of a band director and a piano teacher. His recording career started in 1957 with the single Jo Baby, about his high school sweetheart, and he released over a dozen more by the middle of the 60's.

In 1968, Gates formed Bread with Rob Royer and Jimmy Griffin. Their debut album was released in 1969 but only reached 127 on the national charts but the group would breakout the next year with the LP On the Waters. The album included Make It With You which went to number 1 and was the first of nine top twenty hits for the band before they broke up in 1973.

Gates went solo and had a couple minor hits with Clouds (1973 / #47) and Never Let Her Go (1975 / #29) before Elektra Records convinced Bread to reform. They released on album and had a final top ten hit, Lost Without Your Love, before parting ways again.

Post the reunion, Gates had a bit more success as a solo artist with Goodbye Girl (1977 / #15) and Took the Last Train (1978 / #30 Pop / #7 Adult Contemporary) before leaving music to run a cattle ranch.

Here, Gates sings the Bread hit If on the BBC program Musical Time Machine.
