Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett Releasing His Autobiography

by Paul Cashmere, Noise11

Former Midnight Oil frontman and Australian Member of Parliament Peter Garrett will tell his story in Big Blue Sky.

The Garrett biography will detail the life of Garrett through the international rise of one of Australia’s most successful bands, Midnight Oil, to Garrett becoming a Labor minister for two Australian governments.

Garrett was one of the rare breed of genuine politicians who stood for people, indigenous communities, nuclear arms and the environment.

Midnight Oil had eight consecutive Top 10 albums in Australia including three number one albums in a row, Red Sails In The Sunset, Diesel and Dust and Blue Sky Mining.

Midnight Oil also cracked the American chart with Diesel and Dust selling over 1 million in the USA and Blue Sky Mining certified Gold for over 500,000 sales.

The single Blue Sky Mine was also a number 1 hit on the USA's Mainstream and Modern Rock charts. The Oils also had UK success when Beds Are Burning peaked at number 6 in England.

Garrett also served as President of the Australian Conservation Foundation for ten years before joining Labor. He was a member of the House of Representatives for the seat of Kingsford Smith in Sydney from October 2004 to August 2013 and served as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts under Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Garrett’s Big Blue Sky will be released in October.
