Jessie Mueller Wins Tony For Playing Carole King in "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical"

While it failed to win the big prize for Best Musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical did take another major award with Best Performance By an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical going to Jessie Mueller who plays King.

Mueller's was one of two awards the show won with the other going to Brian Ronan for Best Sound Design of a Musical. Beautiful lost the Best Musical award to A Gentlemen's Guide to Love and Murder.

King took the stage at the awards show to introduce a scene from the show which ended with Mueller and King trading lines on I Feel the Earth Move. During her acceptance, Mueller acknowledged King saying "I never thought I’d get to sing with you once in my life, let alone twice."

Mueller made her Broadway debut in 2011 opposite Harry Connick, Jr. in On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. She later had parts in Nice Work If You Can Get It and the revival of Rupert Holmes' The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Neil Patrick Harris won the Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical award for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Featured (supporting) actor and actress in a musical went to James Monroe Iglehart for Aladdin and Lena Hall for Hedwig.

Sting also appeared on the telecast singing the title song from his upcoming musical The Last Ship. Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and Fantasia opened the show with a number from After Midnight.
