Passings: Deon Jackson (1946 - 2014)

Deon Jackson, who told the world that Love Makes the World Go Round, died on Saturday at the age of 68.

Jackson began singing while in high school in Ann Arbor, MI and, before he graduated, had been signed by producer Ollie McLaughlin. He initially had a couple of regional hits around Detroit with You Said You Love Me and Come Back Home but it took two years of touring throughout Michigan before Jackson was able to break through nationally.

The song was Love Makes the World Go Round, which Jackson wrote and was released on McLaughlin's Carla label. It soared to number 3 on the R&B Singles and 11 on the Pop chart but has since gone on to regular rotation on oldies stations.

Jackson scored two more minor hits, Love Takes a Long Time Growing (1966 / #77 Pop) and Ooh Baby (1967 / #65 Pop / #28 R&B) before fading from the national scene. He went on to be a popular performer in clubs around the Chicago area.

After leaving the entertainment industry, Jackson became a teacher and counselor in the Wheaton, IL school district. A personal remembrance posted on an on-line bulletin board said that Jackson never told his students about his past fame until they found an early performance on YouTube.

My dear friend and collaborator. I was a member of his band Deon Jackson & Sunlight. We did several original projects at Soto Sound and later at Chicago Traxx Studios where I was featured on guitar and assisted in the arrangements (I have copies). Deon helped me to get through one of the roughest time periods of my life. We talked a few weeks ago and he never indicated that anything was wrong. He was a magnificent, humble and talented man. RIP
