Festival in Mexico Featuring Kiss, Guns N' Roses, Cancelled Over Safety Concerns

The Mexico state government has cancelled the Hell and Heaven Metal Fest, scheduled for March 15 and 16, over safety concerns.

The festival had signed a long list of classic metal acts including Kiss, Guns N' Roses, Korn, Rob Zombie, Twisted Sister, Lamb of God, the Misfits and Trivium and was set to play at the Feria De Texcoco Estadio De Mexico just east of Mexico City.

According to officials, the festival had not put in place adequate safety plans for a crowd of 70,000 to 80,000 people, specifically citing fire safety, evacuation plans and fireworks technology. To ensure that there were no disturbances, the government has posted over 300 police officers at the venue a week before the scheduled event.

Festival organizers were baffled by the action, saying that they had met on numerous occasions with officials who didn't have any objections. A representative for the organizers stated "I don’t know if this is discrimination against the metal community, I couldn’t prove that’s the case, but there are some things that make you wonder, and one is that massive ‘grupero’ concerts have been held in Texcoco, with as many as 200,000 people."

Organizers remain hopeful that they can get the government to relent and let the show go on before next weekend.
