Knopflerless Dire Straits to Tour U.S.

Dire Straits, without Mark Knopfler and calling themselves just the Straits, will tour this year in the U.S.

Former members Alan Clark and Chris White have formed the new group, adding Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's Steve Ferrone, South African born guitarist Terrence Reis, former Island Records in-house bassist Mickey Féat, session guitarist Adam Phillips and keyboard, percussion and guitar player Jamie Square.

One of the main keys of the new group appears to be guitarist Reis of which Alan Clark says "Dire Straits without Mark Knopfler? He’s such a huge part of Dire straits and such a huge talent, I always thought that was impossible. Until I found this guy."

Clark and White handpicked the rest of the band, going with new members to start with a "clean sheet" rather than hunt down the rest of the original group. A charity show in May of 2011 at Royal Albert Hall received a warm reception and the band decided to make a go of it.

Over the next three years, they toured around Europe with a few shows in the Middle East but had never ventured to the U.S. After a run of dates in the U.K. at the beginning of February, the Straits will travel to the U.S. for 19 shows across most of the country.
