After almost nine years and 75 CDs, Hip-O Select will complete their exhaustive overview of the singles output of Motown Records from 1959 to 1972 with The Complete Motown Singles: Volume 12B: 1972.

Granted, this series has always been for the true Motown connoisseur. Even during their biggest years from 1965 to 1967, the label still released a large number of records that never charted and they are all here along with all of the b-sides.

By 1972, much of the Motown empire of the past decade had moved on. Holland-Dozier-Holland left in 1967 and, over the next few years, more and more of the company's operations moved from Detroit to Los Angeles where the entire company finally consolidated in June. Soon to be gone from the roster were the likes of Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Four Tops, Martha Reeves and the majority of the Funk Brothers who preferred to stay in their home town.

Volume 12B covers the second half of 1972 with hits from Michael Jackson (Ben), Gladys Knight and the Pips (Daddy Could Swear, I Declare, Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)), the Temptations (Papa Was a Rolling Stone), Stevie Wonder (Superstition), Marvin Gaye (Trouble Man) and Diana Ross (Good Morning Heartache).  There are also entries from the growing roster of white artists (Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Rare Earth, Bobby Darin, Lesley Gore) with which the label was experimenting to widen their audience.

There are also rare tracks from: Valerie Simpson, whose unreleased single version of Genius features an alternate vocal from the LP release; G.C. Cameron & Willie Hutch, whose scheduled duet version of Come Get This Thang went unissued until Camerons album release two years later, but without Hutchs voice; Marvin Gaye, whose poignant Christmas single sat on a shelf for 20 years; and Funk Brothers bassist Bob Bobbitt, whose funky Soul label single Gospel Truth was cancelled.

As with the other volumes, a book is included with the history of the label at the time and two essays: a nostalgic and emotional reminiscence by original Four Top Abdul Duke Fakir, and part two of the Detroit-to-L.A. overview by Susan Whitall, a longtime writer for The Detroit News.
