KickStarter Campaign Begins For Tribute Album to Blind Willie Johnson

Jeffrey Gaskill has the dream of bringing the music of blues legend Blind Willie Johnson, as performed by a group of classic veteran artists, to the general public with the album God Don't Never Change: The Songs of Blind Willie Johnson.

As Gaskill states in the video below, Johnson was one of the most important of the early blues legends, yet most don't remember him today. NASA thought so much of him that his song Dark As the Night, Cold as the Ground is included on the gold-plated disc that is on the Voyager 1 spacecraft, the first man-made object to pass out our solar system and into deep space.

Gaskill has already brought together a stellar lineup for the album, including the Blind Boys of Alabama, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones, Sinead O'Connor, Tom Waits, Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All Stars), Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and the Cowboy Junkies with additional artists to be added.

The KickStarter campaign, which started on Tuesday and runs through November 16, is looking to raise $125,000 to get the album to market, paying for the cost of recording, mixing and mastering, manufacturing, production and other related fees. After two days, they are already up to $36,000, but there is a long way to go.

Premiums being offered for pledges include downloads, CDs, guitar picks made from Johnson's home in Martin, TX, a 10" singles box with the original recording backed with the new ones, art prints and a Blind Pilgrim Collection guitar.
