Passings: Braxton Schuffert of Hank Williams' Drifting Cowboys (1916 - 2013)

Braxton Schuffert, the guitarist for Hank Williams' band the Drifting Cowboys, has passed away at the age of 97. He had been in the hospital since Easter weekend receiving unspecified medical treatment.

Schuffert was born in Shelby County, AL and moved to Montgomery at the age of five. By the time he was 16, he had a early morning radio show on WSFA and continued to perform after he went to work at Hormel meets as a delivery truck driver.

In 1938, Schuffert met Hank Williams, who was only 15 at the time, and had him as a guest on his WSFA show. Schuffert helped Williams form his first band and played guitar with the future legend at local events. That band eventually became the Drifting Cowboys.

Even though Schuffert was part of the original group and helped Hank get his start, he was loyal to his family and job and stayed with Hormel for over forty years. He did stay close friends with Hank and Williams helped Schuffert cut his own record in 1950 for MGM under the name Braxton Schooford.

Beth Petty of the Hank Williams museum said that Schuffert was active as recently as February when he came to their building and performed a few songs.
