American Idol Runner-Up Crystal Bowersox to Play Patsy Cline on Broadway

American Idol season nine runner-up Crystal Bowersox has been officially named to play country giant Patsy Cline in Always...Patsy Cline on Broadway. Previews will start in July with performances beginning in August.

Bowersox, who lost in the finals to Lee DeWyze, was known for her soulful, gritty vocals that reminded many of a young Janis Joplin. Her second album, All That For This, was released today.

Always...Patsy Cline includes 27 of Cline's songs including Crazy, I Fall to Pieces and Sweet Dreams. It was originally staged in 1988 in Houston and has since played in regional theaters across the country including the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This is its first production on Broadway.

The play follows the friendship between Cline and fan Lousie Seger, who will be played by Annette O'Toole. Tony winner John Rando (Urinetown) will direct with set designs by Anna Louizos. Jimmy Burke and Jeff Cohen of Burke-Cohen Entertainment are producing.

Cohen said in a press release "Crystal is the ideal performer to play Patsy Cline. In what amounts to a life-imitates-art twist, Patsy Cline was discovered on The Arthur Godfrey Show, the number one TV talent show of its day. And Crystal was discovered on American Idol, the number one TV talent show today."
