Baby It's You, the Story of Florence Greenberg & the Shirelles, Opens April 27 on Broadway

The latest of the jukebox musicals, Baby It's You, will begin preview at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre on March 26 with a scheduled opening on April 27.  The show tells the story of the Shirelles and the woman who produced them, Florence Greenberg (see our earlier story from October on the show).

Starring as Greenberg is Beth Leavel who won the Tony Award in 2006 for The Drowsy Chaperone.  The Shirelles will be played by Christina Sajous (American Idiot), Erica Ash (The Lion King), Kyra DaCosta (Sweet Charity) and Crystal Starr Knighton (TV's American Idol).

The Shirelles - 25 All-Time Greatest HitsWhile the music in the show revolves around the Shirelles catalog (Soldier Boy, Baby It's You, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Tonight's the Night) there is also a sprinkling of other hits from the time such as Twist and Shout and He's So Fine.

The show is actually more about Greenberg who not only found and produced the group, but also wrote the song Soldier Boy and started her own independent label, Scepter Records, who had hits with artists like the Kingsmen (Louie, Louie), the Isley Brothers (Twist & Shout), Dionne Warwick (her entire 60's output), Chuck Jackson and B.J. Thomas.

The show is being produced by Warner Brothers Theatre Ventures and American Pop Anthology with Richard Perry as consultant.  The book is by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux who recently also wrote Million Dollar Quartet and is directed by Sheldon Epps and Mutrux.
