Neil Diamond has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Johnny Mercer Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Hall to salute songwriters whose career catalog shows a history of outstanding creative works. Previous winners run from standards era writers like Sammy Cahn, Harold Arlen and Jule Styne to rock era composers like Stevie Wonder, Elton John & Bernie Taupin and Jimmy Webb.

Songwriters Hall of Fame Co-Chairmen Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff who, themselves, were presented with the honor in 2014, said "Having always been the consummate wordsmith, Neil Diamond has honed the craft of the hook to a fine art, and his storied performances are gifts to people of all ages, genres and backgrounds."

Hall president and CEO Linda Moran added "Neil is the quintessential songwriter, having been on the world radar for decades with anthemic songs that speak to everyone. We are so pleased to be presenting him with the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award."

Diamond recently announced his retirement from touring after revealing that he is suffering from Parkinson's Disease.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on June 14 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.
