The vast amount of live Grateful Dead on CD, vinyl and via download is legendary. No other artist in music history has had their touring activities so extensively chronicled.

On March 23, Rhino, in association of Grateful Dead Productions, is attempting to distill that huge library down onto two discs, both CD and vinyl, from the releases of Warner Brothers and Arista Records.

Here's the hitch. The Dead's live performances tend to run long. Sometimes, very long. So it was impossible to get the full two-CD set distilled down onto two LPs, so Rhino has decided to make the vinyl release two double sets, one released now and another in a few months.

According to band archivist David Lemieux, "We wanted to follow up the 2015 The Best Of The Grateful Dead studio set with a live counterpart, and have focused our efforts on the band’s primary live albums as well as some key tracks from archival concert releases. Just as there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert, there is also nothing like a live Grateful Dead recording; it’s no secret that as good as the Dead’s studio recordings were, they excelled in front of an audience, and this set provides an overview of just how great the Dead were live in concert."
