Mariah Carey, N.W.A., John Mellencamp, Tom Waits, Twenty More Nominated For Songwriters Hall of Fame

by VVN Music

Twenty-Four individuals, duos and groups have been nominated by the Songwriters Hall of Fame for possible induction in 2018.

Six will be selected by the vote of the members of the Hall of Fame for induction in 2018.

Mariah Carey is up for the first time and has a strong case for induction, having written seventeen of her eighteen number 1 songs. Others nominated in the Performing Songwriter category included N.W.A., who could be the second rap act inducted after Jay-Z last year, John Mellencamp, the Isley Brothers and country's Tom T. Hall.

The Non-Performing Songwriter category is actually made up of both people who are strictly writers and those that spend their time between the writing and performing world. The best example of the latter is Bill Anderson who not only had many big country hits, but wrote many for other artists. Also included are the likes of William "Mickey" Stevens, who wrote many Motown hits, Maurice Starr, whose biggest hits were with New Kids on the Block but also wrote for New Edition and the Stylistics, and Allee Willis who had numerous hits with Earth, Wind & Fire.

Inductees are expected to be named after the first of the year with the induction ceremony set for June 14 in New York.
