Roundup of Veteran Artists Reacting to the Death of Tom Petty

by VVN Music

As happens far too often, we wait to pay tribute to our heroes until after they are gone.

The following is our list of reactions from veteran artists which we will be updating on a regular basis:

Joe Walsh

I am shocked and saddened to hear about Tom Petty, a dear friend and a great musician. It was wonderful touring with him this summer. My love and thoughts are with his family and all who loved him. He will be sorely missed.

Neil Young

Rest In Peace Tom

Tom, I'm sure you heard how great your last show was. Everyone was
talking about your happiness and the band's happiness to be with you on
that stage. Those chords are still ringing around the world. You have
been such a great force, a tremendous contribution to music and the
feelings people will hold in their hearts forever when the hear you
everywhere. Peace Brother

Chuck Prophet

Yeah, he was an angry young man. And no, he wouldn’t back down. But he was a romantic to the core. And man, could he get down to the bone. That big-hearted voice. Almost homely. He never lost sight of the rock and roll that inspired him to pick up that guitar (or bass). Never betrayed himself. And he rarely ran with the water cooler crowd. He was always there. And if you lived in SF he was a constant presence, going back to the KSAN days. And even after all those years, I remember watching him with the Heartbreakers on the Super Bowl and they just stood there. Just fucking stood there and played their songs. And it was so damned exciting. So many memories. I never had a Beatle, you know? But I had Petty. Out there on the front lines, showing how it was done. And the image of driving down Highway 5 when American Girl came on the radio and tears started falling down Stephie’s cheeks. She was raised on promises, and she knew there was something more to life.

He pulled in those Heartbreakers from the beginning. He attracted those guys from the get-go. They found each other and it stuck. He gave us his all and made it feel effortless.

James Burton

We are so very saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our good friend, Tom Petty. What a talent he was. A fantastic musician, songwriter and all-around human being.

RIP Tom Petty. Thank you for the music...

Peter Wolf

What an unbelievable loss. Tom worked very hard at everything he did and always with a deep passion and a great sense of dignity. He certainly carved his own way in the music biz while remaining one of the good guys.

I’ll remember his warmth, generosity and sense of humor always. My deepest condolences to his beloved wife Dana, family, band mates and crew. RIP Tom, may you “ride down the king’s highway.” PW

Randy Bachman

Tom Petty. A musical powerhouse that affected so many lives with his tremendous talent. The magic of his legacy is that we will go on listening even though he has left us. Peace and love to his family. What is your favourite Tom Petty tune? Mine's Breakdown.

Buddy Guy

This is a difficult time for musicians and fans across the world. We're sending all our love to Las Vegas and our thoughts are with Tom Petty's family and friends. Thank you for the music, Tom.

Paul McCartney

Dear Tom, so sad to hear of his passing. What a lovely, intelligent and talented man he was. Love to his family.

Don Felder

It is with a shattered heart that I write this post.

Tommy’s passing feels like I’ve lost a little brother. Growing up together in Gainesville and seeing one of my students blossom as an incredibly gifted musician and songwriter has been one of my most fulfilling experiences in this life. It was obvious very early on in his career that his talent, magnetism and charisma were a very special gift that few souls in this world are given. He has given this world so many wonderful memories and touched millions with his magic. Gone far too soon. May he rest in peace knowing how much he is loved and appreciated by all of us that are left behind.

Steve Lukather

RIP Tom Petty
My deepest condolences to his family and all of the Heartbreakers!

Robert Earl Keen

Tom Petty...you will be sorely missed! Our sincere condolences to Tom's family, band, friends and all his fans.

Steve Winwood

“Tom Petty was a gentleman. I had the pleasure and privilege of doing two tours with him. During that time, I got to see what a brilliant songwriter and musician he is, and how much he is loved by millions around the world. My prayers are with Tom’s family and loved ones. He will be missed by so many of us who have been touched by his music.” - Steve Winwood

Steve Cropper

I'm certain you've all heard our brother, Tom Petty, has passed...
My prayers continue for him, and the entire Petty family, (including his band members).
Seems there's a tremendous amount of pain & sadness everywhere right now!
God Bless,
Crop

Bruce Springsteen

Down here on E Street, we’re devastated and heartbroken over the death of Tom Petty. Our hearts go out to his family and bandmates. I’ve always felt a deep kinship with his music. A great songwriter and performer, whenever we saw each other, it was like running into a long lost brother. Our world will be a sadder place without him.

- Bruce Springsteen

Sawyer Brown

Dear Tom Petty,

Man, I could have written this letter a thousand times but never did—but something tells me that if anyone would understand that we don’t always have our timing right, it would be you.

There aren’t enough ways to say thank you to you. For being my traveling companion for more than 40 years. For writing songs that helped make sense of stuff, songs that are their own force of nature and continue to come alive no matter how many times I heard them. For being a Florida boy who showed the world how to rock.

At your 2014 show in Nashville, a college aged young man and his dad sat in front of me. During the intermission between Steve Winwood’s set and yours, they were talking about going through a rough patch in their lives. The dad had recently lost his job and the young man was so uncertain about what awaited him after college. But they knew this—they knew your music was the right place for them to be right then. Mid-way through your set, you played “The Waiting” (a song that owns significant real estate in my own life and heart):

“The waiting is the hardest part
Every day you see one more card
You take it on faith, you take it to the heart
The waiting is the hardest part”

After the first time you sang that chorus, the dad leaned over and put his arm around his son in a way that without a doubt said, “I’ve got you, kid.” And his son put his arm around his dad, and they stood there singing every word to that song. At the end of the song, they hugged and then both pointed at the stage. And I got so choked up at that moment—and I kept thinking, “I hope you know this, Tom Petty. I hope you see this. You did this. YOU gave this to us. To all of us. This connection that your songs make. I hope you know that.”

I’ve never forgotten that moment—and I’ve always hoped that you knew the part you played in thousands of moments like that. Something tells me you do now.

Rock on!

Hobie

Warren Haynes

RIP Tom Petty- Man, am I tired of doing this? Here I am again trying to express a sense of loss, with words, which is hard enough to do without the depressingly uncanny frequency of major losses we’ve suffered this year- and it’s barely October.

Tom Petty was a great songwriter. If he’d written only a handful of the classic songs we’ve all known and loved through the years this would still be the case. But he defied history. He did what so few can do- he kept up the pace for over 40 years and as great as the songs from the early albums were he actually continued to get better and better, composing a lot of his best works later in his career. And he kept them coming. I remember commenting during a short tour we did together with the Allman Brothers and the Heartbreakers that they had so many hits they couldn’t fit them all into one show. And not just hits. The kind of hits that "everybody" likes. Casual fans, rockers, musicians, singer-songwriters, male and female- across the board. Everybody loves Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. And for good reason. I can remember in different stages of my life, (going all the way back to 1976 when I first heard them) no matter where my head was- if I was going through a blues phase, or a jazz phase, or a folky phase, or a funk phase- anytime I would hear a new Tom Petty song on the radio it was like “damn, that’s a good song”. And like all great bands from the 60’s and 70’s the Heartbreakers had a sound. You knew it was them as soon as you heard it. Evolving and adapting but never straying too far from that sound, they somehow managed to navigate their way through 4 decades of an ever-changing music business- a feat unto itself.

But Tom Petty was also a true artist in the way that he fought for the right to deliver his music uncompromised and his well known disputes with the corporate side of the music industry helped pave the way for other artists to do the same. I still remember his battle to keep the record company from raising the price on Hard Promises because it would be unfair to the fans. Reading about that as a 21 year-old kid inspired me to be conscious of those kind of things. I also remember hearing a story (assuming it’s true) of how he would find the person with the worst seat in any venue they were performing in and have them moved down front- another classy act.

I barely knew Tom. We did a handful of shows together. But I was a big fan before I met him and a bigger one afterwards. I’m honored to have played together what little we did. The world needs more Tom Petty’s. Unfortunately there was only one. And now he’s gone. May we all “stand our ground” and “not back down”.- WH

Doobie Brothers

Tom Petty’s departure from this world came much too soon. His music has resonated through generations.

Our condolences go out to his family, friends, fans, and bandmates. Rest in Peace, Tom.

Thank you for Runnin’ down your dream.

Sean Lennon

Tom Petty R.I.P. Some people are just born cool. Such a legend. I was lucky to cross paths a few times.

Lenny Kravitz

I am so saddened by the news of Tom Petty's death. Beside being a genius musician and songwriter, he was the sweetest of human beings. In 1989, when Let Love Rule was released, he was the first person to believe in me, and took me on my first tour as his opening act. His belief in me is a gift that I will always cherish. He also taught me about collecting vintage guitars, which became a passion of mine. In each town we toured, we would go to music shops where I would watch him buy the most beautiful pieces. He was always fun, light hearted, and humble. Rest on brother. You did your thing to the maximum.

Dion

Tom Petty ~ Our hearts are broken, my deepest love and sympathy to his family, and bandmates."A True Rock 'n' Roll Legend" – was the kind of artist who commanded "universal respect."
Eternal Rest my Friend. .

Olivia & Dhani Harrison

Tom was a tender southern gent in life, a poet and a music master on stage. He had a rocking chair wisdom that brought everything back down to earth. We will love and miss him for the rest of our days.

Our thoughts are with his family and all the Heartbreakers.

John Fogerty

It is almost too much to bear. With the tragedy in Las Vegas and this to happen on top of it. We are just devastated... Tom's music means the world to me and my wife, Julie, in fact, he is her all time favorite artist. We open our show in Vegas with "I Won't Back Down" ... beyond sad to hear of my friend's passing.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens

So sad to hear that Tom Petty has passed away.

He lived life with the same integrity that he brought to his music, always unafraid to tread his own path.

Our prayers and condolences to his family.

Peter Gabriel

“Very sad to say goodbye to Tom Petty, he was a kind and generous man, an excellent musician and writer and we had daughters who have grown up together since their friendship at Sarah Lawrence College.”

Colin Blunstone

So very sorry to hear of the death of Tom Petty. He was a lovely unassuming man and a great writer and performer who will be greatly missed by all those who knew him and all those who loved his music.

Mike Love

I'm very saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Petty. A great artist loved by millions, we will miss you greatly Tom.

Mike Ness

Still reeling from Tom Petty’s performance two weeks ago, they played all of my favorites. The Wildflowers cd never leaves my disc player as it is, and now it never will. I’m overwhelmed with sadness after hearing of Tom’s passing and words cannot express how I’m feeling, but I’m grateful that we had him in our lives for as long as we did. My heartfelt condolences to his family and band mates. 🙏

Melissa Manchester

I don't recall if we ever shared a stage,I know we never collaborated on a song. My wistful condolences have as much to do with the common decades we shared in the music industry, each traveling their own path.

You will be remembered by those who loved jumping out of airplanes with your tuneful 'Free Fallin'. And you,a hard working musician...free at last.

Blind Melon

Rest easy Tom...You will be missed by many. Thank you for all the incredible music you left us. Heartbreaker 💔
#RIP #TomPetty

Mick Jagger

So sad about Tom Petty, he made some great music. Thoughts are with his family.

Alice Cooper

Unfortunately I never got a chance to work with #TomPetty and I never properly got to know him, but he was always one of those artists everyone wanted to work with, myself included. It is so rare to find someone who commands such universal respect in this business. He was a rock n roll lifer with music in his blood. This man delivered a wealth of great songs to his fans and to the world and that is something to celebrate. He was an honest renegade, a rebel and a true original. I read that he only really felt himself in the studio or on the road and to that I can truly relate. Rest In Peace Tom and sincere condolences to your family, your friends and your countless fans around the world.

Dave Mason

The sadness of the shootings in Las Vegas and now the passing of Tom Petty is close to the home in my heart. Prayers for the world.

John Densmore

I am in shock, as a superb song writing craftsman has crossed over. Tom Petty has joined his fellow Wilbury's - Roy (Orbison) & George (Harrison)... they're rockin' the heavens...jd #TomPetty

Kevin Cronin

“I am at a loss in trying to express my feelings at this moment. I can't believe that Tom Petty has passed away at such a young age. His songwriting is masterful in its simplicity and honesty. I feel Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the best American rock band, ever. He is both a peer and an inspiration to me. I am heartbroken at his passing, and my deep sympathy goes out to his family and loved ones.”...kc

Kathy Valentine

Never close to Tom, but went back a long way. First heard him in England, they figured out quite some time before the US how great he was. He let me and Carla have one of his unreleased songs for our first Textones singles. Over the years we met a few times, and I got to know several of the Heartbreakers, especially Benmont Tench, longtime keyboardist. Of all the artists I love, his talent is the one I would have chosen for myself. Lets blast our favorite Tom Petty songs and celebrate his life.

Joe Elliott

“I can’t say I knew Tom, although I did meet him twice, once to get his autograph backstage after I saw him open for Nils Lofgren at the Sheffield City Hall in 1978, and in a bowling alley of all places in 1983 when Def Leppard & Tom happened to be in the same town on the same night, but I’m incredibly saddened by the news of Tom Petty’s passing. I love that 1st album (that’s what he signed for me!), always have, always will, but I have to add that Full Moon Fever was played on an almost daily basis when Leppard were writing & recording the Adrenalize album. Through his work with the Heartbreakers and The Traveling Wilburys he’s left us with an incredible legacy to enjoy forever, it’s such a shame he has left us way before his time.

RIP Tom, safe travels into the Great Wide Open..."

Dwight Yoakam

Just about the time when the Punks had overrun the music world, sacked and burned Rome, this cat showed up still Redneck, Hot Rod, Rockin'!!

The Motels

Tom Petty was a song writing inspiration...a gift of brilliant economy and overflowing creativity...he had a way of conjuring hooks, that once you heard them, would never leave you, they became permanent, indelible...

i had the pleasure of meeting "Tommy"...yes...down to earth...nice guy...

on a day when waking to the shooting in Vegas made us all feel that things could not get any worse...

they just got worse...we lost a great one...R.I.P. Tommy

Slash

Devastating news about #TomPetty. A profound loss. Sad sad day today.

Greg Kihn

I can’t visualize a world without Tom Petty. I played many gigs with Tom and the Heartbreakers over the years. Our careers started about the same time. Tom was the consummate professional, whether it was fronting the Heartbreakers, singing with the Traveling Wilburys or doing his solo projects. He was the driving force behind so many musical moments. As a songwriter Tom was incredibly prolific. He consistently turned out classic, timeless songs, decade after decade. Tom’s economy of expression was amazing. He said things in fewer words than any other songwriter I can think of. The man is a giant.

I remember opening for him the night before the legendary rock venue Winterland closed. He was so focused. He was incredible that night, but then he was incredible every night.

Gina Schock

Tom Petty was one of my songwriting heroes. I am deeply saddened by his untimely death. It was such a privilege to be at a couple dinner parties with him. This news just blows my mind. It feels like the day Bowie died all over again.

Michael Brewer (Brewer & Shipley)

Dave Davies

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers toured with the Kinks early in his career. I thought he was unique and a beautifully minimalist rocker-classic stylish and cool- he helped put cool and laidback into R&R

Tom petty kept his cool / head when many rockers of his time were too busy trying to be macho and hip and boringly superficial , loud and obviously.
A huge influence on Rock. he always seemed a quiet and solitary musician. When I spent time with him he was polite and respectful . I Love his band his approach his music his demenour his wonderful songs. exquisite recordings.

Tom petty I applaud your work your legacy and integrity. Long Live your music. God Bless you.

I will miss you but I have your music. Wow thankyou so much for that. - Dave Davies

John McEuen

In regard to mr. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - His surprise passing is a loss like the others, a difference being a lot of us felt like we knew him though his great music. His passing broke a lot of hearts today, too. and the brief fortunate time I spent with him is the 'bright spot' of this day of bad news. I need to tell you, to me he seemed a kind man, one who cared about and was excited to make music for others.

It takes me back to the time when Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was recording a cut for Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume III. Tom was mixing his own album down the hall. Thinking it would be great to have him sing Good Night Irene with us and Willie Nelson, on behalf of the band (after Tom's playback stopped on his mix) I asked him if he "wanted to sing Good Night Irene with Willie Nelson and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band". He jumped at the chance, left his session and minutes later was working on the harmony with Jeff, Bob, and Ibby. Tom sang lead wonderfully the 'Sometimes I live in the country... sometimes I live in the town..' verse and we all picked along. My wife took the photo... It was a great day.

Thank you, Tom for being with us all so graciously.. please go sing to all those who have left us ...
