Black Sabbath Named Golden God, Prophets of Rage Honored at Metal Hammer Golden God Awards

by VVN Music

Late last year, it was unknown if their would ever be another Metal Hammer Golden God Award ceremony.  The magazine that ran the awards was shutdown along with other popular British music tomes; however, their previous owner came to the rescue.

On Monday night (June 12), Metal Hammer held their Golden God Awards at the IndigO2 in London with WWE star Chris Jericho hosting.

Metal Hammer Editor Merlin Alderslade said "After a difficult end to last year in which the future of our magazine looked uncertain, we couldn’t have thought of a better way to celebrate our comeback. From the one and only Chris Jericho returning to host our awards for a record-breaking third time, to seeing legends like Tony Iommi, Tom Morello and Chuck D walk out on stage, to honoring the contemporary names who make our scene great, it was the kind of evening that only the Golden Gods can provide. As always, though, the most important thing was the metal community coming together again – and we salute everyone who has supported us in the last year and beyond, be it by coming to the show, buying our magazine or simply spreading the good word of heavy. Horns up!”

The big award of the night, the Golden God, was presented to Black Sabbath with Tony Iommi on hand to collect the honor.

The Spirit of Hammer award, given to an artist that "hold the principles and passion of metal and what Metal Hammer stands for in their daily lives", was presented to the "new veteran" band Prophets of Rage made up of Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, DJ Lord, Chuck D and B-Real.

Iron Maiden received the Best Game award for their Legacy of the Beast while Devon Townsend, formerly of Strapping Young Lad, was named Riff Lord.
