by VVN Music

On Sunday night (June 4), the winners were announced for the 62nd annual Drama Desk Awards with Bette Midler taking the second of the New York Theater trifecta of awards.

Midler had previously won the Outer Critics Circle Award for her role in the revival of Hello, Dolly! and can now add the Drama Desk trophy for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.

Bette took one of three awards given to the show, the others being Outstanding Revival of a Musical and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Gavin Creel.

The big winner of the night was the musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, winning for director and three craft awards. If it had not played previously off-Broadway, it may have won more but was ineligible as it was already able to be nominated in a previous year.

Come From Away won Outstanding Musical, along with Outstanding Featured Actress (Jenn Colella) and Outstanding Book For a Musical (Irene Sankoff and David Hein).

Andy Karl won Outstanding Actor in a Musical for Groundhog Day.

On the play side, Oslo won Outstanding Play and Jitney took Outstanding Revival of a Play. Acting awards went to Kevin Kline (Actor, Present Laughing), Laura Linney (Actress, The Little Foxes), Danny DeVito (Featured Actor, The Price) and Cynthia Nixon (Featured Actress, The Little Foxes).

The Tonys, the third of the major awards for the season, are this Sunday night (June 10). Word is that Midler will not be performing with the cast of Hello, Dolly!
