Guardians' Soundtrack Jumps to Number 4, Diana Krall Fails to Make Top Ten

by VVN Music

It's another good week for veteran artists on the Billboard 200 with ten albums in the top forty, four of which are debuts.

The top album of the week, as expected, goes to the collections of 60's and 70's hits Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix, Vol. 2. After two weeks in the lower half of the top ten, the album jumps to number 4 on the strength of the movie opening. Volume 1 also holds strong, dropping only from 8 to 11 in its 82nd week on the chats.

Gorillaz also get a second week in the top ten as Humanz drops 2 to 9.

The top debut by a veteran artist goes to Diana Krall whose Turn Up the Quiet opens at 18, her lowest charting studio album since 1999's When I Look Into Your Eyes peaked at 56. Her last six non-holiday studio sets went to the top ten.

The Greateful Dead are back with two more live sets as Barton Hall, Cornell Univ., Ithaca, NY May 8, 1977 starts at 25 and May 1977: Get Shown the Light opens at 33. The albums show the two distribution channels that the Dead use for their releases. Barton Hall was given a full commercial release and is available at retailers and sites such as Amazon. Get Shown the Light was a website only set comprised of 4 shows, including the Ithaca performance, over eleven discs. Based on history, Light will be off the chart next week while Barton Hall shows a much better chance of sticking around.

Texas punk rockers At the Drive-In have, by far, the highest charting of their four releases since 1996 as In-Ter A-Li-A premiers at 39. Their first two albums, Acrobatic Tenement (1996) and In/Casino/Out (1998) didn't make the Billboard 200 while their third, Relationship of Command (2000), peaked at 116.

English rockers Slowdrive chart for the first time in the U.S. as their self-titled album opens at 50. Like At the Drive-In, this is their fourth album going back to 1991 and is their first in over two decades.

Blondie's number 4 debut in Britain this week was certainly not duplicated in their home country as Pollinator debuts 63; however, it is their highest charting album in America in eighteen years. In 1999, No Exit went to 18 but their three releases since have not done well, The Curse of Blondie (2003 / #160), Panic of Girls (2011 / Did not chart) and Ghosts of Download (2014 / #109).

Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo' have joined forces for the album TajMo giving both artists the highest charting albums of their careers. Mahal has been recording since 1968 and Keb' Mo' since 1980.

The final debut by a veteran artists goes to the Afghan Whigs whose In Spades starts at 108. That is far short of their last album, 2014's Do to the Beast, which peaked at 32.

John Mellencamp, who debuted last week at 11 with Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, falls to 180 in his second week while the Grateful Dead's Dick's Picks, Vol. 22 and New Found Glory's Makes Me Sick, which debuted last week at 34 and 40, respectively, did not make the chart in their second week.
