Bobby Rush Wins Album, Historical Album at Blues Music Awards; Susan Tedeschi, Curtis Salgado Win Three

It was a tremendous night on Thursday for veteran artists at the Blues Music Awards.

Bobby Rush took the two big general awards for albums, winning Album of the Year for Porcupine Meat and Historical Album for A 50-Year History of Bobby Rush.

Susan Tedeschi won three between her singing and her work with the Tedeschi Trucks Band with husband Derek Trucks, Band and Rock Blues Album for Let Me Get By along with the solo Contemporary Blues Female Artist.

Curtis Salgado was also honored three times for Soul Blues Male Artist, Soul Blues Album for The beautiful Lowdown and Song of the Year for Walk a Mile in My Blues written with David Duncan and Mike Finigan.

Kenny Neal was one of two veteran double winners for Contemporary Blues Album (Bloodline) and Contemporary Male Blues Artist while Joe Bonamassa was named B.B. King Entertainer of the Year and was awarded with Guitarist of the Year.

Single veteran winners included Eric Bibb (Acoustic Album), Doug MacLeod (Acoustic Artist), Mavis Staples (Soul Blues Female Artist), Lurrie Bell (Traditional Blues Album), Bob Margolin (Traditional Blues Male Artist) and Cedric Burnside, Kim Wilson and Terry Hanck (all instrumental awards).

The previous evening, Mavis Staples, Magic Slim, Johnny Copeland, Willie Johnson, Henry Gray and Latimore were inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame for performers. Amy van Singel, co-founder of Living Blues Magazine, was the only non-performer inducted.  The Hall of Fame also recognized W.C. Handy’s Father of the Blues as its Classic of Blues Literature selection. Honored in the Classic of Blues Recording Album category was John Lee Hooker’s 1966 Chess album Real Folk Blues, as were a quartet of Classic of Blues Recording songs: Bo Diddley’s signature tune Bo Diddley, Tommy Tucker’s Hi Heel Sneakers, Albert King’s I’ll Play the Blues for You, Son House’s Preachin’ the Blues and Howlin’ Wolf’s I Ain’t Superstitious.
