Metallica Back to Top Veteran Artist Album; Bob Dylan Falls Off Chart in Second Week

by VVN Music

There's not a lot of new releases from veteran artists to anchor the charts this week, so we have a few old stalwarts taking the higher positions.

Metallica is back to having the top selling + streaming album by a veteran artists with Hardwired...to Self Destruct. The album, now in its 21st week of release, is at number 16. It also is at the top of the Hard Rock Albums.

The really impressive album, though, is Keith Urban's Ripcord which is just three weeks away from being out for a year. This week, it sits at number 23 but, even a bigger achievement, it has returned to the number 1 spot on the Country Albums chart.

On the other hand, Bob Dylan's Triplicate, the three-CD set of standards, gave Dylan his lowest charting studio album in 24 years and, it its second week of release, it has fallen completely out of the Billboard 200. This has to be one of the biggest failures of Dylan's very long career.

There are only two new albums by veteran artists this week with the first, Deep Purple's Infinite, coming in at 105. A major hit in the U.K., the album only managed to chart five spots higher than the band's last release, Now What?! (2013 / #110). Deep Purple haven't managed to make the American top 100 since 1990's Slaves and Masters went to 87.

The other new album is a rare classical set to make the Billboard 200, Bach Trios by Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer. Most likely the popular Thile, who started out in Nickel Creek and now hosts radio's Prairie Home Companion, helped push the album up the charts to 141, but Yo-Yo Ma has also occasionally visited the chart with various collaborations.
