MercyMe Hit Top Ten; Bob Dylan Has Worst Chart Position in 24 Years

by VVN Music

It was the best week for new albums by veteran artists in the U.S. since last year's holiday season as nine new sets hit the Billboard Top 200.

The biggest goes to Christian band MercyMe who take Liver to number 10. It is also the top Christian album in the U.S.

MercyMe released six independent albums before their first major release, Almost There. This is their fourth top ten album in a row after The Generous Mr. Lovewell (2010 / #3), The Hurt & the Healer (2012 / #7) and Welcome to the New (2014 / #4).

Trace Adkins debuts at 35 with Something Going On, giving him his lowest charting album on the Billboard 200 since 2001. In between, Adkins had seven albums ranging from Dangerous Man (2006) and Proud to Be Here (2011), which both peaked at number 3, to X (2008) which only went to 32.

Bob Dylan's latest album, Triplicate, is a major disappointment starting at number 37 and giving the master his first studio album to not make the top ten in 24 years. Since World Gone Wrong (1993 / #70), Dylan has been on a run of seven top tens from 1997's Time Out of Mind through the first two standards albums, Shadows in the Night (2015) and Fallen Angels (2016).

Aimee Mann also has a multi-release low as Mental Illness opens at 54. Her last two albums, @#%&*! Smilers (2008) and Charmer (2012) made it to the top 30.

At 78 is the latest compilation by Neil Diamond, his fifteenth to chart and his second in three years. While more complete than either the single or two-CD version of 2014's All-Time Greatest Hits, it falls well short of the number 15 peak of that set. All-Time Greatest Hits was also the highest charting of any of his collections.

Well, after so many new releases that are trailing their predecessors, we finally come to one that is doing better. Jamiroquai would have only had to make number 200 to beat their last album, which didn't chart, but Automaton did much, much better debuting at number 94. Their last album to do as well in the U.S. was 2001's A Funk Odyssey which hit 44.

Rodney Crowell started his career in the 80's with a series of number 1 country singles but, in his later years, has moved on to be a major Americana artist. His latest, Close Ties, starts at 138. His last, The Traveling Kind with Emmylou Harris, went to 78 but his last solo set, Tarpaper Sky, only made it to 168.

At 149 is a major disappointment for The Mavericks, Brand New Day, the lowest charting album of their career. To be fair, they had three albums that didn't chart at all, their first two (The Mavericks (1991) and From Hell to Paradise (1992)) and their sole release on Sanctuary (The Mavericks (2003)); however, of their six albums that did make the Billboard 200, it is the only one not to hit the top 100.

Finally, at 157, is the first album to make the top 200 by Los Angeles-based metal band Body Count. Their seventh album, Bloodlust, starts at 157.
