Gregg Rolie to Be 22nd Person Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame More Than Once

by VVN Music

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is unique in that individuals can be inducted more than once depending on their affiliations over the years.

Clyde McPhatter was the first person to accomplish the feat when, in 1987 he was inducted for his solo career and, again, the next year for his time with the Drifters.

The latest, up until this coming Friday night, were both Ringo Starr and Lou Reed. Ringo went in with the Beatles in 1988 and Reed with the Velvet Underground in 1996 with both being inducted as soloists in 2015.

Only once was an artist inducted twice on the same night, in 1997 when Stephen Stills went in with both Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

So far, only one person has been honored three times, Eric Clapton, who went in with The Yardbirds in 1992, Cream in 1993 and as a soloist in 2000.

On Friday night, the 22nd member of this esteemed group will be inducted, Gregg Rolie.  While Rolie may not have the name recognition of a Starr or a Clapton, he was, nonetheless, an integral member of two inducted bands.

In 1998, Gregg was inducted as an original member of Santana along with Carlos Santana, Jose Chepito Ares, David Brown, Mike Carbello and Michael Schrive. Those members were considered by the hall as the "classic" lineup of the band and are the ones that played on their first two albums, Santana and Abraxas. Interestingly, Neal Schon, who joined the band in 1971 and appeared on Santana III and Caravanserai, was not selected even though Carlos Santana considers him part of the classic lineup. Both appeared on last year's return of the original Santana band on Santana IV.

This year, Rolie and, ironically, Schon, are being inducted for being part of Journey. Rolie played keyboards on the band's first six albums and, for Journey and Look Into the Future, was the lead singer for the group. He shared vocals with Schon on Next before Steve Perry joined in 1977.
