Garland Jeffreys to Release "14 Steps to Harlem" on April 28

by VVN Music

It's possible that Garland Jeffreys is better know in other countries around the world than his own and that's a true shame.

A contemporary of Lou Reed while attending Syracuse University, he began playing in New York night clubs in the mid-60's. In 1970, he released his first recording with the band Grinder's Switch and, three years later, his first, self-titled, solo album.

Jeffreys only charted one record on the U.S. Hot 100, a cover of 96 Tears (1981 / #66) but it was a different story in Europe where 1979 single Matador was number 1 in Belgium and top five in a number of other countries, and 1991's Hail Hail Rock 'N' Roll was top ten in the Netherlands and Switzerland. In addition, two of his fifteen albums were Europe-only releases, failing to find distribution in his home country.

On April 28, Jeffreys will release his latest, 14 Steps to Harlem, on Luna Park Records with guests Brian Mitchell, Ben Stivers, Laurie Anderson and his daughter Savannah. Produced by James Maddock, the album continues his long tradition of genre defying music with literate, edgy lyrics.

Jeffreys recently premiered the official video for the title song:
