Depeche Mode Debuts at 5; Chuck Berry Scores Second Highest Charting Album of Career

by VVN Music

Depeche Mode have officially scored their eighth straight top ten album in the United States.

The band, whose routes date back to 1977, didn't catch on in the U.S. until 1990, after six albums, when Violator went to number 7.  Since that time, every one of their studio albums has made the top ten.
  • Violator (1990 / #7)
  • Songs of Faith & Devotion (1993 / #1)
  • Ultra (1997 / #5)
  • Exciter (2001 / #8)
  • Playing the Angel (2005 / #7)
  • Sounds of the Universe (2009 / #3)
  • Delta Machine (2013 / #6)
  • Spirit (2017 / #5)
Spirit also tops the Rock and Alternative Albums charts.

Spoon, on the other hand, have missed the top ten for the first time since 2005 as Hot Thoughts only debuts at 17. Their last two albums, Transference (2010) and They Want My Soul (2014) debuted at 4 while 2007's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga started at 10.

When artists, die, it normally sends their albums back to the highest parts of the charts. That didn't happen to quite that extent with Chuck Berry; however, his performance is all relative. Berry was never a big album artist so the number 33 debut of his 2006 album The Definitive Collection gives him the second highest charting album of his 60+ year career.

Only four of Berry's studio albums and five of his collections have ever made the Billboard 200, an exceptionally low total for such an influential artist. Even more important, this is only the fourth of those albums to make the top 100.

Berry's charting albums:
  • The London Chuck Berry Sessions (1972 / #8)
  • The Definitive Collection (2006 / #33)
  • Chuck Berry's Greatest Hits (1964 / #34)
  • Chuck Berry's Golden Decade (1967 / #72)
  • Chuck Berry's Golden Decade, Vol. 2 (1973 / #110)
  • St. Louis to Liverpool (1964 / #124)
  • 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Chuck Berry (1999 / #134)
  • Bio (1973 / #175)
  • From St. Louie to Frisco (1968 / #185)
The Definitive Collection is also the top selling Catalog Album of the week.

The Tedeschi-Trucks Band, made up of husband-and-wife team Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, premiers at 39 with Live From the Oakland Fox. Live albums traditionally chart lower but a top 40 start is excellent when the band's three previous studio albums all peaked in the teens.

Rompiendo Fronteras, the sixteenth studio album from Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández, finally puts the singer on the American Albums chart, opening this week at 123.

Finally, the veteran death metal band Obituary hit the Albums chart for the second time in their 28 year career with their self-titled album which opens at 184. Their only other album to chart was 2014's Inked in Blood which went to 75.
