Set List: The Grammy Awards

by VVN Music

Let's face it, while the Grammys are an awards show, the vast majority of the time is spent on performances.

In the earlier days of the awards, performances on the show revolved around the nominated works. If you sang on the show, you did the songs for which you were being honored.

Not anymore. Today, the Grammys are about promotion. Getting your artist a performing slot on the awards is one of the highest forms of advertising that a record company can do.

That's why, on Sunday night, we saw Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Metallica, Lady Gaga and A Tribe Called Quest. None of those artists were even nominated for a Grammy this year, yet they had music to promote and were given airtime. It makes great television, but it detracts from the true purpose of the show.

Then there were the special performances saluting those who had died. The salutes to George Michael and Prince were two of the highlights of the night even though Adele had to restart he performance of Michael's Fast Love. Once she got herself together, she did a stellar job.

The same goes for the combination of The Time and Bruno Mars who performed for Prince, although having two of the three songs in the salute not actually be Prince recordings, Jungle Love and The Bird by The Time, was a bit odd. Still, Bruno Mars' version of Let's Go Crazy was superb including a great guitar solo at the end by Mars himself.

Other highlights of the evening included Adele's show opening Hello, The Weeknd and Daft Punk's medley of Starboy and I Feel It Coming and Maren Morris and Alicia Keys performing Once from Morris' Hero album.

On the low side was the tribute to the Bee Gees which, from everything we could see, was just a five minute commercial for the Academy's tribute to the group that will be shot later this week and aired in the coming months, and Beyonce's Love Drought/Sandcastles.  While critics and fans are going to hail the performance, the world of social media gave it a great big "huh?".
