Veteran Artists Share Stories and Tributes to Martin Luther King

by VVN Music

While many veteran artists are just sharing quotes from Martin Luther King in tribute to the man on the anniversary of his birth, there are also a number who are including personal remembrances.

Quincy Jones

Back in 1963, my band & I played at Jackie & Rachel Robinson’s Stamford residence for their annual NAACP jazz benefit. While I was there, a man in a black suit & tie walked over to me & introduced himself as “Martin King.” We talked about a lot of things, but through it all, I could just feel his spirit inside….It was powerful & I felt his message loud & clear...That day, I became an advocate of Dr. King, all the way up until his assassination & beyond. It was a long journey & still is...so on this special day as we remember Dr. King’s dream & all that he stood for, I’m proud of my brother Lee England Jr. for using his voice as a vehicle to deliver the message of another dream...I’m honored to have been a part of it. #areWeThePeople #MLKDay

Paula Cole

I was born 8am, April 5th, 1968, the morning after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. To me, my birth is a reminder of his death, and therefore his life. My skin is "white" and yet I have two Native American tribes in my blood. I have multi-racial family of different shades of brown and I so very deeply take to heart MLK's words and work. We will continue his vision here, through love, through the music, through our community. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness. Only light can do that"... Thank you MLK for your heart, mind and soul. We will do our best for you.

Mavis Staples

Today it is Dr. King's day. From how he lived and what he preached, words were revealed and songs composed. I am still on that highway, singing about the freedom marchers and reminding anyone who listens: keep on marching until Dr. King's dream is realized.

Our best national holiday: Martin Luther King Jr day. If we have a patron saint of America it is Dr. King. We need to follow his lead: rise up, take action, stay committed, stay involved. "The moral arc of the universe is long but it bends towards justice". #fightthegoodfight
