Sting, Justin Timberlake, Pharell Williams Receive Academy Award Nominations; "La La Land" Ties All Time Record

by VVN Music

While it is doubtful that they can beat the juggernaut that is La La Land, both Sting and Justin Timberlake have been nominated in the Best Song category at the Academy Awards.

La La Land received fourteen nominations on Tuesday morning, tying the all time record held by All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997).  Major awards for the film include Best Picture, Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Actress (Emma Stone) and Best Director (Damien Chazelle).

The most wins that La La Land could get is thirteen as it has two songs nominated in the Best Song category. It is also unlikely that Gosling will win Best Actor up against critical favorite Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) which means the best it could hope for would be twelve awards. The most Oscars ever won was eleven by Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997) and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003).

In the Best Song category, Sting was nominated for the song The Empty Chair from Jim: The James Foley Story while Timberlake was honored for Can't Stop the Felling from Trolls.

In addition, Lin-Manuel Miranda's (Hamilton) spectacular year continues with a nod for his song How Far I'll Go from Moana.
