Harry Belafonte Getting New Anthology in Celebration of His 90th Birthday

by VVN Music

Singer, actor and activist Harry Belfonte will turn 90 on March 1 and, to celebrate the milestone, Legacy Recordings is releasing the new anthology When Colors Come Together...The Legacy of Harry Belafonte.

Few can claim to have made their performance debut with a bigger roster, singing with Charlie Parker's band which also included Miles Davis and Max Roach. Originally a pop singer, Belafonte soon found interest in traditional styles of music, studying the recordings at the Library of Congress.

Among those styles was calypso music, which originated in the Trinidad and Tobago islands. He released Matilda as a single in 1953 but really broke the music into the mainstream with his 1957 album Calypso. The title, which included such future standards as Day-O (Banana Boat Song), Jamaica Farewell and Man Smart (Woman Smarter), spent 31 weeks at number 1 and 58 weeks in the top ten.

Three tracks from that album are included on When Colors Come Together which shows off Belafonte's interest in traditional American music (Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair), All My Trials) along with some of his own compositions that have moved into the musical lexicon (Turn the World Around).

In addition, the album openers is a brand new recording of When Colors Come Together (Our Island in the Sun), recorded with a children's chorus.

With each track handpicked by Harry Belafonte, When Colors Come Together... The Legacy of Harry Belafonte provides an essential overview of the artist's career, bringing together his biggest hits and most socially conscious performances alongside songs that are simply near and dear to his heart.

The track list:
