Rolling Stones Hold in U.S. Top Ten; Garth Brooks Has Five Albums in the Top 100; Neil Young Hits Lowest Point of Any Charting Album

by VVN Music

With Christmas just around the corner, the music charts have turned rather stagnant. There's not a lot as far as new music being released and the albums that are breaking through as big Christmas gifts (do people still give music as gifts?) are pretty entrenched near their current positions.

Two rock albums by veteran artists continue to sell well with the Rolling Stones dropping 4 to 10 in its second week with Blue and Lonesome and Metallica holding very strong at 11 with Hardwired...to Self Destruct, now out for four weeks.

Already out for five weeks is the biggest debut for the week by a veteran artists as Garth Brooks starts at 13 with The Ultimate Collection. The ten-CD box set, being sold exclusively at Target, was not eligible to chart in its four weeks because the $29.95 list for the set had the price per disc lower than Billboard's threshold of $3.49. The magazine established that limit, during the first four weeks of release, after sites like Amazon started deep discounting new releases, selling a new Lady Gaga album download for 99 cents, which artificially boosted the sales of the set.

Now that Garth has his big box set on the charts, his combo of Ultimate Collection, the new studio album Gunslinger, his new holiday album with wife Trisha Yearwood, Christmas Together and his older hits set The Ultimate Hits, he can claim five of the top 100 chart positions:
  • 13. The Ultimate Collection (includes Gunslinger)
  • 22. Christmas Together
  • 65. Christmas Together / Gunslinger
  • 85. Gunslinger
  • 94. The Ultimate Hits
Brooks also has set a record on the Country Albums with four of the top ten albums (Ultimate Collection at 1, Christmas Together at 2, Christmas Together/Gunslinger at 8 and Gunslinger at 10). This is the first time an artist has had that many albums in the top ten since 1993 when it was done by...Garth Brooks.

Neil Young's new album, Peace Trail, looks like a major disaster as far as sales are concerned. Since his debut album, 1969's Neil Young, failed to chart, Young has had 38 studio albums hit the Billboard 200 with Peace Train being the lowest charting of them all.

Up until this week, that "honor" had been held by two of his albums, Old Ways (1985) and Life (1987), both of which peaked one spot higher at 75.

Young's highest charting album is 1972's Harvest which hit number 1, followed by 2012's Americana which peaked at 4.
