Metallica Stays in the top 3; How Garth Brooks Hurt His Chances on the Charts

by VVN Music

Metallica has done something that few veteran artists do in this day and age. They've held strong in their second week of release.

Hardwired...to Self Destruct only fell from 1 to 3, showing some of the strongest legs this year. It was only three weeks ago that Bon Jovi's new album, This House is Not For Sale, dropped from 1 to 43 in its second week of release.

The real question of the week, though, is did the release strategy for Garth Brooks' new albums hurt him significantly on the charts?

First, there's the new The Ultimate Collection, a ten CD set that is being sold exclusively at Target stores. It had very strong sales its first two weeks out but, because of how it was priced, it was not eligible to be on the Billboard charts. At $29.95 for ten discs, it fell below the required $3.49 per disc threshold that is the magazine's policy.

Then there is his new holiday album with wife Trisha Yearwood. Christmas Together dropped this week from 7 to 14, but it most likely could have been top five if it had been left as a single package. Instead, it was sold both as a stand alone title and in a two disc set with the new Brooks album Gunslinger. Along with the standalone being at 14, the two-title version is at 21. Combine the sales of the two packages and you have a major chart hit.

Finally, there's Gunslinger which debuts this week at number 25, the lowest position of any album Brooks has ever released but consider what the real sales number for the album could have been. The albums sales were cannibalized over the last month by being included as one of the ten discs in The Ultimate Collection and it lost even more debut week sales with the release of the Christmas Together/Gunslinger set last week. How many true Garth Brooks fans didn't already own the album by the time it was "officially" released?

Previous to Gunslinger, Brooks' lowest charting album was his 1989 self-titled debut which made it to 13. Since then, every one of his studio albums, and that includes his ill-advised side project as Chris Gaines, have gone to the top four.

On the Country Albums, his debut went to number 2 and every one of his studio sets (not counting Chris Gaines) has hit number 1 since 1990 until Gunslinger which debuts at 4.

Brooks' album is the only set from a veteran to debut this week and one of only five debuts by any artist on the Billboard 200.
