Korn, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Leonard Cohen All Debut in U.S. Top Ten; McLachlan, Crosby & the Pretenders Disappoint

by VVN Music

Eleven veteran artists debuted albums this week on the Billboard 200 with three coming into the top ten.

Korn leads the way with The Serenity of Suffering which opens at number 4. That's Korn's highest charting album since 2010's Korn III: Remember Who You Are, breaking a streak of two non-top five releases. Of their twelve studio albums, eight have made the top five.

The Trans-Siuberian Orchestra debuts at 9 with The Ghosts of Christmas Eve. Technically a soundtrack album, the chart positions compares favorably with their last two releases, Night Castle (2009 / #5) and Letters From the Labyrinth (2015 / #7).

Leonard Cohen collects only the second top ten album of his career with You Want It Darker, which opens at number 10. Cohen had never made the top fifty albums in the U.S. until his career resurgence in the early part of this decade. Since then, he has released Old Ideas (2012 / #3), Popular Problems (2014 / #15) and, now, You Want It Darker.

Jimmy Eat World continues a very, very slow descent on the charts with their latest album, Integrity Blues, which premiers at 17.  After two consecutive top tens with Futures (2004 / #6) and Chase the Light (2007 / #5), each new release has done just slightly worse than the previous with Invented (2010 / #11) and Damage (2013 / #14).

Amy Grant is back with a new Christmas album, Tennessee Christmas, debuting at 38. Her last new holiday studio LP, 1999's A Christmas to Remember, opened at 36 so she is sticking right in the same general area. She peaked in 1992 with Home For Christmas which went to number 2 and was not only her highest charting holiday albums but the highest overall.

As we mentioned earlier in the week, the American consumer is just not enamored with the new Elvis Presley albums with new accompaniment by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Wonder of You, the second of the series, premiers this week at 47; however, there is some conciliation as it is the number 1 Classical Album.

At 79 is the new holiday collection from Sarah McLachlan, Wonderland. This is Sarah's worst chart showing for an original studio album since 1991's Solace only went to 167 and the position is even dwarfed by her first Christmas album, 2006's Wintersong, which peaked at 7.

Possibly an even bigger disappointment is the performance of the new David Crosby album, Lighthouse, which debuts at 117.  Only his second solo album since the early 90's, it takes a huge drop from 2014's Croz which peaked at number 36.

The Christian metal band Disciple premier at 125 with Long Live the Rebels while the Original Cast Album to the show Lazarus, which contains three of David Bowie's last recordings, opens at 129.

Finally, there is the third and final disappointing debut of the week, Alone by the Pretenders. Only making it to 150 in its first week, it is a major drop from their last studio effort, 2008's Break Up the Concrete, which went to 32.
