Kenny Chesney Latest to Be Denied Number 1 Album Because of Streaming

by VVN Music

Kenny Chesney has been denied his eighth number 1 album on the Billboard 200 due to streaming.

Streaming figures are now used as part of the calculation for determining the Billboard 200 Albums with 1,500 streams of any song on the album equaling 1 "album-equivalent unit". As streaming technology has become big among young listeners, especially in urban settings, there are automatic boosts to both R&B/Hip Hop artists and younger skewing pop artists.

Chesney has the top selling album in the country this week with Cosmic Hallelujah; however, when streaming is added in, he was passed by Jeezy with Trap or Die 3.

Kenny still has a string of eleven straight studio albums that have made the top three on the Albums chart, something very few artists can claim.
  • No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem (2002 / #1)
  • When the Sun Goes Down (2004 / #1)
  • Be As You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair) (2005 / #1)
  • The Road and the Radio (2005 / #1)
  • Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates (2007 / #3)
  • Lucky Old Sun (2008 / #1)
  • Hemingway's Whiskey (2010 / #1)
  • Welcome to the Fishbowl (2012 / #2)
  • Life on a Rock (2013 / #1)
  • The Big Revival (2014 / #2)
  • Cosmic Hallelujah (2016 / #2)
The CMA Awards also boosted some older country albums for the week with Keith Urban moving back up to number 12 with Ripcord, Tim McGraw's Damn Country Music returning to the chart at 86 and Alan Jackson's Precious Memories returning at 117.

The second highest debut by a veteran artist goes to Testament whose Brotherhood of the Snake enters at 20. That's their second highest charting album but a bit of a drop from 2012's Dark Roots of Earth which debuted at 12.

Then there are a couple disappointments with new Christmas albums. Jimmy Buffett debuts at 50 with 'Tis the Season, his lowest charting album since 1989's Off to See the Lizard peaked at 57. Even his first holiday title, 1996's Christmas Island, did better, going to 27.

Then there is Neil Diamond and his Acoustic Christmas, which premiers at 125. That is the worst chart performance for an original Diamond studio album since Velvet, Gloves and Spit failed to chart in 1968. It also indicates it might be time to stop with the Christmas albums as each has charted lower than the one before:
  • The Christmas Album (1992, #8)
  • The Christmas Album, Volume II (1995 / #51)
  • A Cherry Cherry Christmas (2009 / #60)
  • Acoustic Christmas (2016 / #115)
All is not lost, though, for Buffett and Diamond as there is a lot of Christmas season left and the albums could still see an uptick in sales as the holiday approaches.
