A Tribe Called Quest Tops Chart; Brooks Doesn't Chart With Sales of 100,000; Bon Jovi Sets New Record For Biggest Fall From #1

by VVN Music

We finally have a week much like the last few in Britain with veteran artists taking three of the top 10 and six of the top 20 of the Billboard 200.

A Tribe Called Quest have their second number 1 album and first in twenty years with We Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service. The album is also number 1 on the Album Sales, Digital Album Sales, R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Rap Albums charts.

This is only the sixth studio album for the rap icons who have reached the top ten four times:
  • People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm (1990 / #91 Pop / #23 R&B)
  • The Low End Theory (1991 / #45 Pop / #13 R&B)
  • Midnight Marauders (1993 / #8 Pop / #1 R&B)
  • Beats, Rhymes and Life (1996 / #1 Pop / #1 R&B)
  • The Love Movement (1998 / #3 Pop / #3 R&B)
  • We Got It From Here...Thank You 4 Your Service (2016 / #1 Pop / #1 R&B)
Then there is the strange case of Garth Brooks. When projections were made for sales and sales plus streaming for the week, his brand new Target exclusive box set was firmly at number 2, but it is nowhere to be seen on the Billboard 200 or the Album Sales chart.

That's because Brooks and Target aren't selling The Ultimate Collection for ENOUGH.

Back in the time when Amazon was deep discounting brand new albums to as low as 99 cents, Billboard made the determination that an album had to list for at least $3.49 for the sales to be counted towards their chart. What most didn't know was that the rule also said $3.49 times the number of discs in the album.

The Ultimate Collection has ten discs and retails for $29.99.  The price for the set would have had to have been $34.00 to be counted on the Billboard charts.

Brooks did, however, debut at number 11 with his wife, Trisha Yearwood with the album Christmas Together. It is also number 1 on the Independent and Country Albums charts.

Brook's other new album, Gunslinger, hits stores on Friday.

At number 7 is the return of Leonard Cohen's You Want it Darker, up from 48 in its fourth week of release. Cohen also returns to the Billboard 200 with The Essential Leonard Cohen at 13.

You Want it Darker is also at the top of the Tastemaker Albums, Rock Albums and Americana/Folk Albums charts.

Sting premiers at 9 with 57th & 9th, his return to more mainstream pop and rock. Of his twelve solo studio albums, ten have made the top ten; however, his last album, The Last Ship, peaked at 13.

At 17 is the debut of #MYNAMEISJOETHOMAS by R&B singer Joe, the exact same position that his last album, Bridges, started in 2014. Six of Joe's albums have reached the top ten in the past including two that peaked at number 2, My Name is Joe (2000) and Ain't Nothin' Like Me (2007).

Country's Ronnie Dunn, formerly of Brooks & Dunn, is at 33 with his third solo studio album, Tattooed Heart. His first solo disc, Ronnie Dunn, went to number 5 on the Billboard 200 and 1 on the Country Albums; however, his second, Peace, Love, and Country Music was released on his own independent label and didn't chart. The new album is his first for Nash Icon.

The Grateful Dead starts at 39 with the latest Dave's Picks album while the Swedish heavy metal band In Flames premiers at 60 with Battles. That is a considerable drop from their last two albums, Sounds of Playground Fading (2011 / #27) and Siren Charms (2014 / #26).

In new compilations, David Bowie's Legacy opens at 78 and Pink Floyd's The Early Years: 1967-1972: Cre/ation is at 103.

At 122 is The Fall of a Devil Angel by Engima, becoming the lowest charting album for the group ever in the U.S. but all is not awful. The set tops both the Dance/Electorinc Albums and the New Age Albums charts.

Finally, the latest version of the NOW Christmas series, NOW That's What I Call a Merry Christmas, starts at 156.

Now, the REALLY bad news, this time for Bon Jovi.

Their new album, This House is Not For Sale is the new record holder for the biggest drop from the number 1 spot in Billboard history. Last week's number 1 is 43 on the new tally, breaking a record that had been held by Incubus for ten years.

The biggest drops ever from number 1 on the Billboard 200:
  • This House is Not For Sale - Bon Jovi (2016 / 1 to 43)
  • Light Grenades - Incubus (2006 / 1 to 37)
  • Mission Bell - Amos Lee (2011 / 1 to 26)
  • I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It - The 1975 (2016 / 1 to 26)
