Red Hot Chili Peppers Jump Back to 5 in the U.S., Morrison Debuts at 9 For Best Ever, Weir at 14

by VVN Music

Eight veteran artists debuting new albums in the top 100 on the Billboard 200 in a week is the best showing in many months, yet the biggest selling veteran album is not new.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers jump from 24 to 5 in its 16th week of release with The Getaway, an impressive move for an album that old.

It's not the only older album to resurge. Radiohead's A Moon Shaped Pool, which has also been on the charts for sixteen weeks (it's been out longer because of a split release schedule) jumps from below 200 to number 11 and Blink-182's California went 75 to 25.

Van Morrison has the highest charting debut by a veteran artist for the week with Keep Me Singing. Starting at number 9, it is also Morrison's highest charting album ever in the U.S. beating out 2008's Keep It Simple and 2012's Born to Sing: No Play B which both peaked at number 10.

At 14 is Bob Weir's Blue Mountain, his first solo album to chart and the third highest studio album of his career including his time with the Grateful Dead.
  • In the Dark - Grateful Dead (1987 / #6)
  • Blues For Allah - Grateful Dead (1975 / #12)
  • From the Mars Hotel - Grateful Dead (1974 / #16)
  • Wake of the Flood - Grateful Dead (1973 / #18)
  • Sunshine Daydream - Grateful Dead (2013 / #19)
Opeth opens at 24 with Sorceress which is their sixth album (out of twelve) to chart in the U.S. and the fourth highest. Both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion went to 19 and 2008's Watershed topped out at 23.

The Drive By Truckers premier at 26 with American Band, down from their last album, English Oceans, which debuted at 16.

John Prine ended up ten spots lower then was originally predicted, but a number 30 debut for For Better, Or Worse totally blows out his previous best, 2005's Fair & Square (#55). Not bad for a guy who has been releasing albums for 45 years on the fringes of the music scene.

Eric Clapton's latest live album, Live in San Diego, starts at 47 while the new live set from Jimi Hendrix, Machine Gun: The Fillmore East: First Show 12/13/1969, opens at 66.

The revived Pixies debut at 72 with Head Carrier. That's a big drop from the first album of their comeback, 2014's Indie Cindy, which went all the way to 23 and became their highest charting set.

Gospel singer Fred Hammond premiers at 113 with Worship Journal: Live, his first live set to make the list. His best position came in 2012 when God, Love & Romance went to 8.

Finally, towards the bottom of the chart at 186 is Notte Magica: A Tribute to the Three Tenors by Il Volo with Placido Domingo, at 187 is Rich Man by Doyle Bramhall II and, at 192, World Gone Mad by Suicidal Tendencies
